What are the symptoms of urticaria?



Urticaria refers to a common group of disorders that causes weals and red itchy patches on the skin surface. It can occur at any age group, but its incidence is highest at puberty and middle age.

What are the symptoms of Urticaria?


Activation of certain cells (mast cells) release histamine and other chemicals in your blood stream. There are two varieties of urticaria, one which is confirmed to a small part of the body like hand, leg etc. known as localised urticaria and the one which occurs widespread all over the body – trunk, eyes and lips may get swollen which is known as generalised urticaria. The skin reaction is usually sudden and abrupt and is triggered by:

  • Certain medication
  • Insect bite
  • Contact with stinging plants
  • Heat or cold
  • Sunlight
  • Stress
  • Exercise
  • Alcohol
