Corns and Calluses

Corns and Calluses

What are Corns and Calluses?

Corns and calluses are the thick and hard areas of the skin that develop when the skin undergoes repeated rubbing or pressure. Corns and calluses usually improve when the areas are not subjected to pressure. The most commonly affected areas are feet and toes or hands and fingers. They can sometimes worsen if you have metabolic disorder, for example Diabetes.

Symptoms of Corns and Calluses
  • Corns and calluses appear as dry, hard and thick areas over the skin
  • They may be grayish white or yellowish in color
  • Sensation over a corn or a callus is usually less than that of the surrounding healthy skin.
  • Corns and calluses are usually painless but there may be pain if pressure is applied over the corn while walking or while wearing shoes.
  • Calluses appear on the weight-bearing areas of the feet like heels, palms and knees.
Causes of Corns and Calluses

Repeated pressure on the same area of skin causes it to die and form a thick and hard protective layer.

Corns and calluses on the hand are caused by playing certain musical instruments, repeated handling of tools like hammer, constant playing of sports like tennis or due to the pressure applied on the hand by some other objects.

Corns and calluses on the feet are caused by ill fitting shoes, walking barefoot, or on the nodules formed due to rheumatoid arthritis, or due to a wrong posture while walking, or on a bulge which is a bony enlargement at the base of the big toe.

Diagnosis of Corns and Calluses
  • A detailed history about person’s hobbies and work will give insights about the causes behind hardening of the skin areas.
  • A careful physical examination to rule out other causes of thickened skin
  • X-ray to to rule out any bony deformities that may be causing the corns or calluses.
Self help
  • Wear comfortable and properly fitting shoes.
  • Apply a pad to cover the area where the corn or callus is formed to reduce pressure and rubbing over it.
  • Soak the affected area in warm water. It helps to soften the skin over the corn and makes it easy to remove the dead skin.
  • Use pumice stone to slowly rub off the dead thickened skin over the corn or callus.
  • Moisturize the skin regularly to keep it soft
