What is Trichotillomania
Trichotillomania is an irresistible urge to pull out one’s own hair from its roots. The victims of this serious condition cannot stop themselves from plucking out their eyebrows, eyelashes and hair as well. Researchers believe that trichotillomania is an impulse control disorder (ICD) which means that it is a type of psychological condition.
Repeated pulling out of one’s hair leads to noticeable hair loss. The eyebrows and eyelashes become sparse or are missing. There is an increasing sense of tension immediately before pulling out the hair, followed by relief after the hair is pulled out.
Some victims may also chew or eat the pulled-out hair. Swallowed hair may lead to, pain in the abdomen, nausea, vomiting of blood to bowel obstruction.
Who develops Trichotillomania?
Most people develop it during adolescence; but it can start at a much younger or older age. Trichotillomania has been known to affect more women than men.
What are the causes of Trichotillomania?
The specific causes of trichotillomania are not completely clear. It is believed to result from a combination of genetic and environmental factors including abnormalities in the natural brain chemicals, serotonin and dopamine. Often a stressful event may be associated with the onset of trichotillomania such as change of schools, abuse, family conflict, or the death of a parent. The symptoms may also be triggered by pubertal hormonal changes.
Homeopathic treatment for Trichotillomania
Hair-pullers cannot just do away with the habit. Overcoming the hair-pulling urges may involve a specific type of talk therapy called CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy), medication, or a combination of both.
Homeopathic treatment coupled with behavioural therapy and habit reversal training is a definite approach in treatment of trichotillomania. Children may outgrow this disorder and would not require any treatment if the condition has started in early childhood. But onset in adulthood often suggests long standing psychiatric disturbance.
The holistic approach of Homeopathy proves to be most effective for the treatment of psychosomatic disorders. Homeopathic medicines help the brain deal better with urges, making them easier to resist. With the right help, though, most people overcome their hair-pulling urges and the hair grows back.
