Alopecia universalis is a condition in which there is a complete loss of hair from the entire body including scalp.
It is an advanced form of alopecia areata (Alopecia Areata is a patchy hair loss on the scalp or on other parts of the body). A person starts losing hair in patches over the scalp and the body which finally leads to complete hair loss all over the body.
Alopecia universalis is an autoimmune condition wherein the body’s immune system attacks the hair follicles and causes the hair to fall off.
There is complete hair loss all over the body including the scalp.
Most of the people who suffer from alopecia universalis do not experience any signs and symptoms but rarely there may be itching and burning over the affected areas.
In few cases of alopecia areata, the patient may have some other diseases associated with hair loss like thyroid problems, atopic dermatitis, nail changes like ridging or pitting, etc.
There may be also an emotional element of depression, anxiety and stress associated with alopecia universalis.
The exact cause of alopecia areata is unknown but it is believed to be an autoimmune disorder. The immune system mistakenly attacks the hair follicles of the body and makes the hair fall off.
Alopecia universalis is noticed more in people who have either or both parents with the same condition.
The signs and symptoms give a clear indication of alopecia universalis. In some cases, a scalp biopsy may be needed to confirm the diagnosis.
