Lower backache is one of the most common reasons in our day to day life for visiting different doctors. It can occur due to various reasons an injury, muscle sprain or strains due to sudden movements, herniation of an intervertebral disc etc.

Backache can also result from certain diseases like spinal cord cancer, sciatica, arthritis, infections of the spine or of the kidneys etc.

Low backache mostly occurs between the age of 30-60 years due to age related changes which take place in the spinal cord.



Common causes of low backache are:

Muscle sprain

  • The muscles and ligaments in the back can stretch or tear due to excessive physical stress like lifting heavy weights. When this happens, the person experiences symptoms like pain and stiffness in the back. Proper rest and physical therapy gives significant relief of symptoms.



  • Sciatica occurs due to a herniated disc if the disc presses on the sciatic nerve. The person experiences symptoms like pain radiating from the back to the legs along the course of the sciatic nerve.

  • The pressure on the spinal cord causes symptoms like numbness, weakness and cramps in different parts of the body according to the nerve roots or the part of the spinal cord involved.
  • The symptoms become worse while walking or standing.


Curvatures of the spine

  • In some cases, there are spinal abnormalities or curvatures which are known as scoliosis, kyphosis and scoliosis.
  • These conditions are present since birth and are diagnosed when the child grows up into a teenager.
  • The abnormal posture causes pressure on the muscles, tendons, ligaments and vertebrae causing pain and poor posture.

The diagnosis is done by a physical examination of the back and also based on the ability to sit, walk, stand, bend and lifting the legs.
