What is Acne and its causes?

Acne is one of the most common skin diseases seen in both men and women. It usually develops at teenage when the oil producing glands (sebaceous glands) are most active. A plug of sebum and dead skin cells is formed which narrows and blocks the follicles (follicles are small canals which connect the oil glands with skin pores) resulting in pimples. Acne usually runs in families.

Besides excessive oiliness and hormonal imbalance other factors like diet rich in fats, sugary foods, excessive consumption of sweets and chocolates, excessive use of greasy cosmetics and mechanical rubbing. Habit of picking of acne makes them worse.

Acne is commonly seen on the face, neck, upper chest, back and shoulders. The course of pimples is chronic with frequent remissions and exacerbations. There is a tendency to flare up during menstrual periods.

Complications of Acne

Acne can lead to pitting and scaring of the skin particularly when the pimples are big, nodular and filled with pus.

The mild form is not very troublesome. Pimples may lead to great anxiety and emotional anguish. Hypertrophic scars can occur on chest, back and shoulders. Sometimes, these scars become keloidal.

Homeopathic Treatment for Acne

The treatment works by reducing the inflammation and optimizing the production of the oil (sebum). The recurrences are reduced and severity is effectively controlled using oral homeopathic medications. The duration of the treatment course varies from person to person and depends on type of acne.

Cystic, nodular and resistant cases of acne need to continue the medicines for a longer duration, however mild and moderate cases of acne respond quickly to the treatment.
